We Other
by Sue Bentley

It's my stop on the Blog Tour today for Sue Bentley's WE OTHER.
Thank you so much to Rachel's Random Resources for letting me be a part.

Learn about the book, the author, enter the INTERNATIONAL GIVEAWAY and see my thoughts on this dark and magical fantasy book.

Family secrets, changelings, and fairies you never want to meet on a dark night.

Jess Morgan’s life has always been chaotic.

When a startling new reality cannot be denied, it’s clear that everything she believed about herself is a lie. She is linked to a world where humans – ‘hot-bloods’ – are disposable entertainment. Life on a run-down estate – her single mum’s alcoholism and violent boyfriend – become the least of Jess’s worries.

Sue Bentley discovered a love of books at an early age. She worked for Northamptonshire Libraries for many years, while teaching herself the craft of writing. She is the author of the worldwide bestselling Magic Kitten, Magic Puppy, Magic Ponies, Magic Bunny series for age 5-9 years. She also writes for children and adults under various pen names. A lover of English Folklore, her books often contain elements of the otherworld and the darkness within the everyday. Her books have been translated into around 20 languages. We Other is her first book for Young Adults.

My Thoughts:

I gotta tell ya, I do love to immerse myself in some fantasy every now and again.  We Other takes us back and forth from many many moons ago to the Faerie world that's dark and enchanting and cruel, to the present day where, in my favorite parts, we get to learn about Jess and her friendship with Lisa - "Lisa Simpson, as in Marge and Homer's daughter?!" (I loosely quote.)

As with most fantasy books, we get that spattering of instalove (ugh), but Bentley does this minimally and for that I am grateful.  I am not opposed to love - and I know to expect this in most fantasy books, but it's nice to get a more muted version rather than the in-your-face kind we normally receive. For that, I thank you!

I love the sassiness of Jess so much!  I could see myself going around and picking things off the grocery aisles just to put them back, knowing I'm being watched by security and doing it to infuriate them to no end.  Oh there were some laugh out loud moments for me in her actions!

I did feel there were parts that dragged on a bit that could have been cut back a tad.  The beginning was a little confusing when going back and forth between the worlds but once you get used to this, it moves at a moderate pace and there are definitely some surprises along the way!

I think those who love the coming of age/dark fantasy reads will enjoy this book greatly!
