My Review:

People of the world.... if you haven't read Ferencik yet, what are you doing with your life? I insist you run yourself out to a bookstore, or run your fingers on the keyboard to an online store, and grab yourself either The River at Night, Into the Jungle... or her latest, GIRL IN ICE.  Each story is in very different settings: isolated and creepy and yet absolutely gorgeous and hypnotizing.  You hear the animals and continued jungle noises in Into the Jungle and you feel the rush of the River and it's powerfulness in The River at Night.  But in GIRL IN ICE - welcome to the Arctic Circle where if an ice wind hits you, you can freeze immediately. But you're still in wonder of the fact that below you are the amazing animals of the Arctic and if you press your ear to the ground, you can hear their symphony of sounds.

I honestly wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this one from the first few pages.  But I certainly wasn't expecting the story that I received. I'm in awe of people like Val who are so uniquely talented in their field.  I can barely speak one language correctly (and that's pushing it), much less know ancient languages and speech patterns.  Uff, my heart was with Sigrid (the girl that thawed from the ice dead alive).  It switched from being a sci-fi mystery to me to then almost a fantasy world at the end but I was here for all of it.  This type of subject matter speaks to me and I found myself more and more engaged with this read the further that I got in. 

I also now need an army of walruses to put upon my enemies. 😉

Let me start by saying that Erica Ferencik has always brought some intense suspense novels in settings that really make you feel isolated and cut off from the world. That is no different here with her newest GIRL IN ICE. Instead of the woods or the rain forest, we are stuck in the Arctic Circle where you can almost feel that -50 degree weather (unfortunately I have experienced those kinds of horrible temperatures and I never want to again). While this wasn’t my favorite of her books this was still an intriguing read for me. If you’re hoping for a really fast paced thriller then you might leave disappointed – this falls into the slow burn suspense category.

There were parts that I really enjoyed and others that didn’t entirely work for me. The premise was very unique and not something that I had read before – a woman found in ice that thaws out and actually lives. Val, a linguist, is brought in to help interpret what she is trying to tell them and from there we get an almost locked room suspense feel because they’re stuck in the Arctic Circle. I know there are a lot of rave reviews out there and I highly recommend her other books, but this one just didn’t hit all the marks for me personally.
