Suzy and her brother, Lim, live with their abusive mother in a town where the stars don’t shine at night. Once the abuse becomes too much to handle, the two siblings embark on a sordid cross-country murder spree beginning with their mom. As the murder tally rises, Suzy’s mental state spirals into irredeemable madness.

My Review:

Well this wasn't a fun read in any aspect and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  I'm not sure what that says about me but WOW.  I've seen a lot of discussion about this novella when it first came out and I think due to the discussions, I was expecting... worse... and I mean that in terms of abuse and graphicness of scenes.  Don't get me wrong - they're pretty graphic... I was just expecting something more for some sordid reason.  But I seem to have a harder shell when it comes to these kinds of reads than most people.

Suzy is a VERY interesting character.  Her thought process is absolutely fascinating and what I love best about this read is the whole nature vs nurture aspect of it that I have always been a bit obsessed with.  That, along with my very keen interest in serial killers - well, looks like the perfect combo here.

We travel along with Suzy through a variety of situations - her terrible relationship with her mother at home, her traveling with her brother, the aftermath of a culmination of murders.... we see her mind slowly break over this time - or rather, break further.  The only thing I would've liked is for a few things to be fleshed out a little bit more as I felt some things were just left hanging.  But maybe that was intentional considering Suzy's mental state.

This read won't be for everyone but if you can take some graphic horror, then I highly recommend this amazing debut novel.  I definitely will not look at pigs the same again.  And my heart will continue to go out to Suzy - regardless of what her future holds.

★★★★
