Happy to be today's stop on the 12 Days of Clink Street Christmas! I chose to read Dating Daisy, about a 52-year-young woman trying to find love again via the internet. Internet dating is the norm these days and this story is easy to empathize with!
What do you do when
you're a newly divorced 52 year old mother, keen for a second chance of
romance? Why internet dating of course! Daisy Mae_224 embarks on the internet
dating process with trepidation. Having not been on the dating scene for nearly
30 years, and with fairly rudimentary computer skills, she finds herself
embroiled in a series of haphazard and hilarious situations. Daisy keeps a
diary of her internet dating life and reveals detail by detail, the ups and
downs of her midlife dating extravaganza. Soon after starting out, Daisy
realises her true mission. With no past experience and no-one/nothing to guide
her, she needs to produce - Internet Dating lessons. Read on to find out about
PLONKERS, muppets and MAWDs, and a whole host of amusing anecdotes, tips and
ideas. Working by day as a Sexual Health doctor, the story as it unfolds
contains accounts of Daisy's clinical experiences with patients in the Sexual
Health clinic. She also reflects on her past life with Voldemort (the dreadful
ex-husband). With advice and encouragement from Imogen, her 17 year old
daughter, her surrogate parents known as the Amigos, with a big house and
swanky swimming pool, her friend Pinkie and from Jeannie, her nonagenarian
friend from the Nursing Home, Daisy resiliently persists in her quest to find a
long term partner. This is a heartfelt story that will ring bells with anyone
who has ended a long term relationship and now wants to find somebody new. It
is humorously written, full of emails, poems, limericks, and even a recipe!
Daisy can't resist her pages of advice on topics like "Kissing" and
"Anti-Snoring." It is a unique and highly amusing book, which will
make you laugh out loud! So read on and see. Will Dating Daisy find her "prairie
vole?" Or will the whole process end in disaster?
My Thoughts:
As internet dating has become the norm in society, we see tons of successful couples stemming from these (I know of 3 off the top of my head that met and later married via different internet dating sites)... but we also see the bad, later hilarious, stories that also can be a result of dating someone without that organic touch. I can tell you of three interesting stories of my own which have kept me away from ever internet dating again. Seem three is a magical number here... 😄
This book reads like a diary and we get to see the amusing, and sometimes painful, journey Daisy goes through in trying to find that perfect partner. This realistically portrays the insecurities and doubts a woman has when filling out a profile. What can I say that won't make me sound x, y and z but make me sound a, b, and c instead? What should I wear? Does this outfit say this or that about me? It's terrifying to put yourself out there. Especially when you're 52 and starting all over again in the romance department. Daisy is a successful doctor who has a zillion things going for her. Yet, somehow, this one part of her life is driving her mental.
There were some absolute laugh out loud moments in this read. Some readers may find the humor a bit dry but it absolutely works for me. I do think some younger readers may not be able to empathize much with Daisy. While this is all new to her and we get that perception, to the younger generation, this is the norm! There was some repetitiveness as we get almost every single thought that Daisy gets. However, in this is a diary type of read, that is to be expected.
A realistic look into the mind of a woman who is embarking on a new-to-her journey to find a partner in life. Something we all have gone through in one way or another. I applaud Daisy in her quest!
