My Thoughts:
Rose's little brother, Billy, goes missing and then is later found dead. Sixteen years later, she still blames herself. The trauma she's endured in the past continue to haunt her and then one day she finds Billy's blanket in her neighbor's house. How did he get it and has the wrong man been serving time for a murder he didn't commit? We got back and forth from Rose's present situation, dealing with the trauma and controlling her behavior and daily situations in a tight clutch, to her past, when she was just eighteen, naive and unsure of herself. Slater does a fantastic job of showing you the works of a sociopath and how he cleverly and carefully chooses his target. Like with Blink, Slater reels the reader in from page one, keeping the pace fast and the reader involved. I do hate it when the cover states it's a psychological thriller with a killer twist. I go in expecting some crazy ass story that makes me head reel. I didn't get quite that with this book. Things are definitely twisty and you do question if you're right or not while reading it but I didn't get that big reveal with a punch I was expecting. Slater is an author who I will always pick up. Her storytelling is wonderful and I really did feel for Rose and how one decision she makes as an awkward teen/adult (at 18) somersaults into ramifications she still has to deal with many years later. ★★★★ |
I haven't been disappointed by a Bookouture thriller yet, and I loved K.L. Slater's BLINK from earlier this year. So when I read the synopsis for THE MISTAKE, I didn't hesitate to request it!
We start the book out with Billy's disappearance. Billy's older sister, Rose, is blaming herself for his disappearance and her guilt begins to consumer her when his body is found. Fast forward 16 years, and while Rose is helping her neighbor, Ronnie, she discovers Billy's blanket in his attic. How did it get there? Why was it there? Is the wrong man serving the jail time for Billy's murder? Does she really know who Ronnie is?
This had the elements of a psychological thriller - jumping timelines from Rose's perspective. We go back and forth from her past around when Billy was taken and then to present day. We're brought on a journey through her life and see how one decision can change the rest of your life. Slater does a fantastic job pulling the readers in right away. That's what I loved about BLINK, you instantly realize you won't but putting this book down any time soon. I know a lot of thrillers lately have been focused on the death of a child, and they can sometimes get graphic. This one focuses more on the disappearance than the details of his murder.
Overall, this is a page turner of a psychological thriller. It doesn't have the crazy "killer twist" that the book claims to have. So don't let that set your standards too high - I know Chandra and I both found that misleading. That doesn't mean the ending wasn't good! I will definitely continue to read more from Slater!
